isite visitor information centres: where to get real local advice in New Zealand
New Zealand has an official visitor information network with more than 60 staffed centres. They are free to walk into, staffed by locals, and easily the fastest way to find out what is actually worth doing where you are standing.

Search engines will tell you the ten most photographed things in a region. The staff at the local visitor information centre will tell you which of those ten is closed for track maintenance, which one is packed by 10am, and the beach twenty minutes down the road that nobody has posted about. That is the difference, and it costs nothing.
What is an isite?
isite is New Zealand's official visitor information network — more than 60 staffed centres from Kaitāia in the far north to Stewart Island in the deep south. They are usually the green-and-white buildings in the middle of town, near the waterfront, the railway station or the main street. Walking in is free and nobody expects you to buy anything.
Every isite is staffed by people who live in that town. That is the point of the network: the person behind the counter is a specialist in a radius of about an hour, not a call-centre reading a national script.
What they can do for you
- Plan or sanity-check your itinerary for the region, including honest drive times.
- Make bookings nationwide — accommodation, activities, attractions and transport.
- Hand you free regional maps, walking-track leaflets and current weather information.
- Tell you about local events, markets, restaurants and what is open on the day you are there.
- Ring ahead to the isite in the next town so someone there is expecting your questions.
- Many centres offer free Wi-Fi, toilets and somewhere to sit down and re-plan.
Most isites open every day except Christmas Day, though some run shorter hours out of season. The national free phone is 0800 474 830 and the current directory is at isite.nz — check there rather than relying on any printed list, including this one.
isite vs DOC visitor centre — which one do you want?
The two networks overlap but answer different questions. An isite is a general travel desk: everything from where to eat to booking a bed for tomorrow night. A Department of Conservation (DOC) visitor centre is the outdoor specialist, staffed by rangers.
| Ask an isite about | Ask a DOC visitor centre about |
|---|---|
| Accommodation, activities and attraction bookings | Hut and campsite bookings on conservation land |
| Regional itineraries and what's on this week | Track conditions, closures and alerts |
| Restaurants, events, shopping, local tips | Backcountry weather and avalanche information |
| Free town and regional maps | Detailed topographic and track maps |
| Getting from this town to the next one | Wildlife protection, biosecurity and hut etiquette |
If you are walking a Great Walk, heading into a national park, or going anywhere the weather can turn on you, start with DOC. For everything else, start with the isite.

How to get the most out of a five-minute visit
- Tell them how long you have and how you're travelling. "Two days, no car, one of them rainy" gets far better answers than "what should I do?"
- Ask what's closed. Tracks, roads and attractions shut for maintenance, slips and weather more often than websites admit.
- Ask what locals do on a Sunday. It is the single best question in the building.
- Ask about tides and daylight if the coast or a walk is involved — both decide your day here.
- Pick up the paper map. Mobile coverage disappears in a lot of the places you'll want to go.
Then the getting-there part
The one thing an information centre cannot solve for you is the distance between the good bits. New Zealand's best stops are rarely walkable from town and public transport between them is thin outside the main cities. If you have found three places you want to see and no sensible way to link them, that is exactly what our private day tours and point-to-point transfers are for — tell us the list, we'll build the day around it.
Common questions
- Does it cost anything to use an isite?
- No. Walking in, asking questions, taking the maps and getting advice are all free. They earn commission on bookings you choose to make through them, which is why the advice desk stays free.
- Can they book things for me?
- Yes — accommodation, activities, attractions and transport, anywhere in the country, not just in that town. It is genuinely useful when you are trying to book something in a region you have not reached yet.
- Are isite centres open on public holidays?
- Most open every day except Christmas Day, but hours are often reduced on public holidays and through winter. Check isite.nz or phone 0800 474 830 the same day.
- What's the difference between an isite and a DOC visitor centre?
- isite is general travel information and bookings. DOC visitor centres are run by the Department of Conservation and handle huts, campsites, track conditions, alerts and outdoor safety on public conservation land.
- Is there one at the airport?
- Major airports usually have an information desk, but the full-service isite is generally in the city or town centre. If you land late, the airport desk can still point you at essentials.
