Before you fly

Do you need a visa or NZeTA to visit New Zealand?

Visitor visa versus NZeTA, passport validity, the visitor levy, and the paperwork to have ready before you check in.

Entry rules are the one part of a New Zealand trip you cannot improvise. Airlines check your paperwork at the departure gate, and without the right travel authority you will not be allowed to board — so sort this first, then plan the fun part.

This is general guidance from a New Zealand transport operator, not immigration advice. Confirm your own situation with Immigration New Zealand before you travel.

Start with your passport

Most visitors need a passport valid for at least three months beyond the date they plan to leave New Zealand. Because plans slip — a cancelled flight, a storm in the Southern Alps, an extra week you did not expect to love — six months of validity is the safer target. Renew early if you are close to the line.

What the NZeTA actually is

The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority is a digital pre-clearance rather than a visa. You apply online or through the official immigration app, answer a short set of questions, and approval usually lands in your inbox within minutes — though it can take up to 72 hours, so never leave it to the airport. Once granted, it is valid for multiple visits over two years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

  • Apply through the official government channel only — third-party sites charge a large markup for a form you can complete yourself in about ten minutes.
  • Use the same passport you will travel on. If you renew your passport, you need a new NZeTA.
  • The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy is usually collected in the same transaction. It funds conservation and tourism infrastructure, and most visitors pay it once per visit.
  • Transit passengers passing through Auckland without clearing the border may also need an NZeTA — check before booking a cheap connection through New Zealand.

If you need a full visitor visa

Applications are made online and take considerably longer than an NZeTA — allow several weeks, more in peak season. You will normally be asked to show evidence you can support yourself, proof of onward travel, and that you intend to leave at the end of your stay. Bank statements, a return ticket and a rough itinerary cover most of it.

What happens on arrival

You complete a digital traveller declaration before or on arrival, covering where you have been, where you are staying and what you are carrying. eGates handle most passport holders in a couple of minutes; biosecurity is the slower queue and the one that matters (see our food and medication guides). Auckland arrivals in particular should allow a solid ninety minutes from wheels-down to kerbside on a busy morning.

That last point is worth planning around. A pre-booked private transfer waits for you rather than the other way round: your driver watches the flight, meets you in the arrivals hall and the price is agreed before you land, so a slow biosecurity queue costs you nothing extra.

Common questions

How long does an NZeTA take to come through?
Most approvals arrive within a few minutes, but the official guidance allows up to 72 hours. Apply at least a week before you fly so a manual check does not derail your trip.
Is the NZeTA a visa?
No. It is a travel authority that lets visa-waiver travellers board a flight to New Zealand. It does not give you the right to work, and border officers still make the final decision at the airport.
Do children need their own NZeTA?
Yes — every traveller needs their own, including infants, because it is tied to an individual passport.
How early should I book airport transport?
As soon as your flights are ticketed. Arrival mornings in Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown get busy, and booking early means a fixed price and a driver who is already tracking your flight number.
