Mistakes on your NZeTA: what to fix, and what does not matter

Which NZeTA errors are harmless, which need a brand-new application, and what to do if you renew your passport before the trip.

An NZeTA cannot be edited after it is granted. That sounds alarming, but most small errors are either harmless or fixed by simply applying again — the fee is modest and a second approval does not cancel your travel plans.

Errors you must fix

  • Wrong passport number — the authority is linked to the passport, so it will not be found at check-in.
  • Wrong passport country — same problem, and it changes which rules apply to you.
  • A name that does not match the passport's machine-readable line, including missing middle names or swapped given and family names.
  • Wrong date of birth.
  • A renewed or replaced passport, even if every other detail is identical.

Errors that usually do not matter

  • A typo in your email address — reapply if you never received the confirmation, otherwise the record still exists against your passport.
  • A changed travel date. The NZeTA is not tied to a specific flight.
  • A changed New Zealand address or accommodation plan. You declare that separately on arrival.
  • Extra trips. One approval covers multiple visits for two years.

How to reapply cleanly

Use the official app or website again with the correct details, exactly as printed in your passport. Do not use a third-party agent to 'correct' it — they cannot do anything you cannot, and they charge for the privilege. Keep the confirmation email; airline staff occasionally ask to see it even though the record is checked electronically.

Travelling on a new passport but holding an old visa or authority? Carry both passports if the old one is still valid, and be ready to show the link between them.

Do it before you leave home

Airport wifi and a boarding queue are a bad place to discover a mismatch. Check your approval against your passport a fortnight out, at the same time you confirm your first night's accommodation and your airport pick-up.

Common questions

Can I edit my NZeTA?
No. There is no edit function — you submit a fresh application with the correct details and the new record is the one that counts.
Will applying twice cause a problem at the border?
No. Duplicate applications are common and the correct, current record is the one checked against your passport.
I renewed my passport. Is my NZeTA still valid?
No — it is tied to the old passport number, so you need a new one before you fly.
