Hobbiton is one of the few film locations anywhere that was rebuilt permanently. The 44 hobbit holes sit on a working sheep and beef farm in the Waikato, and the only way in is on a guided tour from The Shire's Rest at 501 Buckland Road. You cannot drive to the set, and you cannot wander it alone.

How far it actually is

Measured with Google's routing service in September 2026, off-peak, one way:

FromDistanceDriving time
Auckland city centre167 kmAbout 1 hr 55 min
Hamilton49 kmAbout 45 min
Tauranga58 kmAbout 50 min
Rotorua69 kmAbout 55 min

Auckland traffic is the variable, not the highway. Leaving the city between 7am and 9am can add 30–45 minutes to that 1 hour 55. Leaving Hobbiton at 3pm to drive back into Auckland can add the same again. Book a mid-morning or early-afternoon tour and you dodge both.

The tour itself

  • The standard Movie Set tour runs about 2.5 hours, departing from The Shire's Rest by shuttle onto the farm.
  • Group sizes are capped — around 40 on the standard tour — and departures are timed, so you book a specific slot rather than turning up.
  • It is a guided walk of roughly 1.5–2km on formed paths with some gentle hills, finishing with a drink at the Green Dragon Inn.
  • There are longer and evening options, including banquet-style dinner tours; those add dining and take considerably more of the day.
  • It runs in all weather and every day except Christmas Day. Wear shoes you can walk a farm in.
  • Peak season slots — December to February, and school holidays — sell out well ahead. Book before you plan the driving.

Current prices, tour options and departure times are on hobbitontours.com and they change; we deliberately do not quote them here rather than print a number that goes stale.

Three ways to do the day from Auckland

Just Hobbiton, back the same day

Roughly four hours of driving around a 2.5-hour tour. Leave around 9am for a midday tour and you are back in Auckland by late afternoon. It is a comfortable, unhurried day and the easiest option if you have small children.

Hobbiton plus Waitomo

The classic double. The Waitomo glowworm caves are about an hour and fifteen minutes from Matamata, and the two together make a genuinely full but achievable day: early departure, Hobbiton mid-morning, caves mid-afternoon, back in Auckland for dinner. Both need booking, and the cave tour times are the fixed point to build around.

Hobbiton on the way to Rotorua or Taupō

The smartest version if you are heading south anyway. Hobbiton sits almost exactly on the Auckland–Rotorua line, so it costs you no extra distance at all — you stop, tour, and carry on with just an hour to Rotorua. Doing it as a one-way transfer with your luggage in the vehicle beats driving back to Auckland to start again the next morning.

Practical notes

  • The address is 501 Buckland Road, Hinuera, near Matamata — not Matamata town itself. Put the road address in your phone, not just "Hobbiton".
  • Arrive at The Shire's Rest 20–30 minutes before your slot; late arrivals miss the shuttle and slots are not usually moved.
  • Bags larger than a small daypack are not taken onto the set, and there is no drone flying.
  • There is a café and a large gift shop at the entrance, but nothing else nearby — Matamata town is 10 minutes away for a proper lunch.
  • Photography is encouraged and the guides are used to it; commercial filming is not.
  • The set is genuinely good in drizzle. Green hills, low cloud, no queue for the Green Dragon.

We run Hobbiton days from Auckland as a private tour — your own vehicle and driver, pickup from your hotel or the airport, a departure time built around the tour slot you booked, and the option to add Waitomo or finish in Rotorua instead of coming back. You buy the set tickets directly; we handle everything on the road.

Common questions

How far is Hobbiton from Auckland?
About 167km, or 1 hour 55 minutes of driving to 501 Buckland Road near Matamata. Allow more if you leave central Auckland in the morning peak.
How long is the Hobbiton tour?
The standard Movie Set tour is about 2.5 hours from The Shire's Rest, including the shuttle onto the farm and a drink at the Green Dragon Inn.
Do I need to book Hobbiton in advance?
Yes. Tours are timed with capped group sizes and peak-season slots sell out weeks ahead. Book the tour first, then plan the drive around it.
Can I visit Hobbiton without a tour?
No. The set is on private farmland and the only access is on a guided tour departing from The Shire's Rest.
Can I do Hobbiton and Waitomo in one day from Auckland?
Yes. They are about an hour and fifteen minutes apart and both are bookable. It makes for a long but comfortable day if you leave Auckland early.
Is Hobbiton worth it if I haven't seen the films?
Most people say yes. It is a beautifully maintained piece of set-building on a lovely stretch of Waikato farmland, and the guides tell the story well enough that the films are not a prerequisite.
