Connecting flights and baggage when you fly in and out of New Zealand

Where you collect your bags, how through tickets work, and how much time to leave between an international arrival and a domestic flight.

Almost everyone flying into New Zealand connects somewhere, and the part that catches people out is baggage. The rule is simpler than it looks: the first airport you land at in New Zealand is where you collect your bags and walk them through border control, no matter where your ticket says they are going.

Arriving and flying on the same day

You will land, queue for passport control, pick your bags off the belt and take them through biosecurity screening. Only then can you hand them back to an airline. For most travellers that happens in Auckland, where the international and domestic terminals are a short walk or free shuttle ride apart.

What a through ticket actually gives you

A through ticket means every flight sits on one booking. It matters more than most people realise: your bigger international baggage allowance usually carries onto the domestic leg, shorter connections are permitted, and if a delay makes you miss the next flight the airline has to rebook you at no cost. Book the legs separately and every one of those protections disappears.

Airlines differ. Air New Zealand runs a domestic transfer desk in the Auckland international terminal for connections booked together; low-cost carriers such as Jetstar generally do not move bags between domestic and international flights at all, so plan on a full re-check.

When a connecting flight is not worth it

For shorter hops, a private road transfer can beat a domestic flight once you count the second check-in, the bag wait and the trip to town at both ends. Auckland to Hamilton, Tauranga or Rotorua, Christchurch to Akaroa or Hanmer, Queenstown to Wānaka — door to door, with your luggage staying in the vehicle.

Common questions

Do I clear customs in Auckland if my final stop is Queenstown?
Yes. You clear passport control and biosecurity at your first New Zealand airport, collect your bags there, and re-check them for the domestic leg.
How long should I leave between an international arrival and a domestic flight?
Three hours is a comfortable minimum on a single booking. On separate bookings leave four or more, because nobody will rebook you if the first flight runs late.
Can a driver meet me if my flight is delayed?
Yes. We track the flight number you give us and adjust the pickup, so a late arrival does not cost you the ride.
