The best things to do on the North Island

Rotorua steam, Waitomo caves, Hobbiton, Tongariro, Coromandel beaches and the far north, with honest travel times.

The North Island is warmer, greener and geologically restless. Three quarters of New Zealanders live here, which means better roads, more towns and shorter gaps between coffee stops — and a landscape that steams, bubbles and occasionally erupts.

Geothermal country: Rotorua and Taupō

Between Rotorua and Taupō the earth's crust is thin enough to see through. Geothermal parks here have geysers that erupt daily, mineral terraces in colours that look edited, mud pools that plop like porridge and steaming valleys formed by an eruption barely a century and a half ago. Add hot pools at the end of the day and you have the most distinctive stretch of country in the North Island.

  • Geothermal park visits take 2–3 hours each; two in a day is comfortable, three is a slog.
  • Huka Falls, just outside Taupō, is a ten-minute stop and worth every second — 200,000 litres a second through a narrow rock chute.
  • Lake Taupō's Māori rock carvings can only be reached from the water.
  • Redwood forest walkways and mountain-bike trails sit five minutes from central Rotorua.

Caves, farms and film sets in the Waikato

Waitomo's limestone caves are lit by thousands of glowworms; a boat drifts through in silence beneath what looks like a night sky. An hour north-east, the Hobbiton movie set sits in rolling sheep country outside Matamata — fully rebuilt, obsessively gardened and surprisingly charming even if you have never seen the films. The two combine into one big day from Auckland, or a relaxed day each from Hamilton or Rotorua.

Volcanoes and the central plateau

Tongariro National Park is a dual World Heritage site for both landscape and Māori cultural significance. The famous alpine crossing is a serious 19 km day, but shorter walks to waterfalls, lava flows and lookouts give you the same volcanic scenery in two or three hours. To the west, the near-perfect cone of Taranaki rises straight out of farmland, with forest walks to mirror tarns that reflect it on a still morning.

Cities worth a day

  • Auckland: harbour views from volcanic cones, the Sky Tower, island vineyards a ferry ride away.
  • Wellington: the national museum, a cable car, a serious coffee culture and film-industry workshops.
  • Napier: an entire town rebuilt in 1930s Art Deco after an earthquake, ringed by cellar doors.
  • Whanganui and the river road: heritage riverboats and one of the country's great scenic drives.

Most of this is one comfortable day trip away from a town you are already sleeping in. We run private day tours from Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupō, Napier, Wellington and the Bay of Islands, and one-way tours that sightsee on the way to your next base instead of doubling back.

Common questions

Can you do Hobbiton and Waitomo in one day from Auckland?
Yes, but it is a 12-hour day with roughly five hours of driving. From Hamilton or Rotorua it becomes a relaxed day with time for lunch.
How far is Rotorua from Auckland?
About three hours by road, longer on a Friday afternoon or a holiday weekend. Many visitors sightsee on the way rather than driving it straight through.
Is Cape Reinga doable as a day trip?
From Paihia or Kerikeri, yes — it is a long day of roughly ten hours including the dune stops. From Auckland it is not realistic in a day.
What if the weather turns?
Caves, geothermal parks, museums and hot pools are all better in the rain. Your driver can reorder the day so the outdoor stops land in the clearest window.
