You do not need a multi-day Great Walk to see the best of New Zealand's back country. A surprising number of the country's signature views — glacier faces, crater lakes, mirror tarns, blue gorges — sit within an easy walk of a road end.
Under an hour
| Walk | Where | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Huka Falls lookout | Taupō | 10 min |
| Hokitika Gorge swing bridge | West Coast | 30 min return |
| Blue Spring at Te Waihou | Putāruru, Waikato | 60 min return |
| Devil's Punchbowl Falls | Arthur's Pass | 1 hr return |
| Mauao (the Mount) base track | Mt Maunganui | 45 min loop |
| Pancake rocks and blowholes | Punakaiki | 20 min loop |
| Te Waikoropupū Springs | Golden Bay | 40 min loop |
Half-day walks
- Hooker Valley Track, Aoraki Mt Cook — 3 hours return, flat, three swing bridges, ends at an iceberg lake. Possibly the best effort-to-view ratio in the country.
- Roys Peak, Wānaka — 5–6 hours return, relentlessly uphill, the photograph everyone has seen.
- Mauao summit, Mt Maunganui — 1.5 hours return, steep, panoramic bay views.
- Rangitoto summit, Auckland — 2 hours return plus a ferry, walking over a 600-year-old lava field.
- Cape Brett or Rangihoua coastal sections, Bay of Islands — coastal cliffs and empty bays.
- Franz Josef and Fox glacier valley walks — 1.5 hours return each, to the terminal viewpoints.
The big day out
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is 19.4 km one way, takes six to eight hours, crosses an active volcanic zone and passes emerald crater lakes that look artificially coloured. It is a point-to-point walk, so you cannot leave a car at both ends — transport between the trailheads is part of the plan, and the finish time is fixed by weather, fitness and how long you stop at the top.
Alpine weather changes in minutes and there is no shelter. Carry a windproof and waterproof layer, warm mid-layer, hat, sunscreen, two litres of water and more food than you think. Check the forecast the morning you walk, and turn back if it is bad — the mountain will still be there tomorrow.
Day walks on the Great Walks
You can sample most Great Walks without booking a hut. Water taxis let you walk a single scenic section of the Abel Tasman coast and be picked up at a beach. The first hours of the Milford, Routeburn and Kepler tracks are all accessible from road ends. The Queen Charlotte Track can be split into day sections served by boat.
The awkward part of almost every good walk is that it starts and finishes in different places, or an hour from your bed. We do trailhead drop-offs and pickups, including point-to-point runs on the Tongariro Crossing, so you can walk one way and still get home.
Common questions
- What is the best short walk in New Zealand?
- For scenery per step, the Hooker Valley Track at Aoraki Mt Cook is hard to beat — three hours, almost flat, and it ends at a lake full of icebergs.
- Do I need a guide for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing?
- Not in summer if you are fit and prepared, though you do need transport between the two trailheads. In winter it is an alpine mountaineering route requiring crampons, ice axe and a guide.
- Are New Zealand tracks well marked?
- Main tracks are well marked with orange triangles and signposted times. Back-country routes can be rough and unmarked, so match the track grade to your experience.
- Is drinking the stream water safe?
- Not reliably. Carry your own water, or treat what you collect.
