Autumn in New Zealand: March, April and May
Mild days, thinner crowds, cheaper rates and golden trees — why autumn is the most underrated season here, and where to see it at its best.

Autumn runs from March to May. The summer crowds have gone home, prices ease off, and the light turns soft and golden. Most of our native trees stay green year-round, but the introduced poplars, willows and larches put on a serious show — especially in Central Otago.
Month by month
March
Still warm, still long days, far fewer people. Beaches are swimmable in the north, the walking tracks are quiet on weekdays, and harvest festivals start appearing in wine regions. The leaves only begin to turn right at the end of the month.
April
The sweet spot for autumn colour, roughly mid to late month. Daylight saving ends at the start of April so evenings get dark early. It is the last month of the main Great Walks season, and by the end of April mountain passes can see their first cold snap.
May
Genuinely cool now, with crisp mornings and mild middays. Accommodation is at its cheapest, ski towns are quiet before the season starts, and the stargazing is excellent with the longer nights.
| City | March (low/high) | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auckland | 15 / 23 °C | 13 / 20 °C | 11 / 18 °C |
| Wellington | 13 / 19 °C | 11 / 17 °C | 9 / 15 °C |
| Christchurch | 9 / 20 °C | 6 / 17 °C | 4 / 14 °C |
| Queenstown | 7 / 19 °C | 4 / 15 °C | 1 / 11 °C |
Where the colour is best
- Central Otago and Arrowtown — the classic golden avenues, usually peaking in the second half of April.
- Wānaka and the Cardrona valley — poplars against the mountains, best mid to late April.
- Hawke's Bay — vineyards turning red and gold, paired with harvest season.
- Marlborough — cellar doors and quiet walking tracks in the Sounds.
- City parks in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin — easy colour without leaving town.
There are three public holidays in April — Good Friday, Easter Monday and Anzac Day — and they are the one time autumn gets busy. Book accommodation and travel early around those dates.
What to pack
Layers. A warm mid-layer, a waterproof jacket and closed shoes cover most of it, plus something warmer for the evenings in the south. If you're driving over an alpine pass in late April or May, check conditions before you set out.
Autumn is our favourite season for day tours — the light is beautiful for photos and the roads are quiet. Tell us what you'd like to see and we'll build the day around it.
Common questions
- Is autumn a good time to visit New Zealand?
- Very. You get mild weather, lower prices, fewer people and the best colour of the year. Late March to mid-April is the strongest window.
- When do the leaves change?
- Colour starts at the end of March, peaks around mid to late April in Central Otago and lingers into early May in warmer regions.
- Will it be cold?
- March feels like late summer, May feels like early winter in the south. Pack layers rather than one heavy coat.
- Do I need snow chains in autumn?
- Usually not, but by late April and May an alpine pass can get a cold snap. Check road conditions if you're driving somewhere high.
