Overview

Head south-west from Tauranga through Rotorua country to Taupō. See the mighty Huka Falls where the Waikato River funnels through a narrow gorge, take in the vast views of Lake Taupō, and enjoy lunch in the lakeside town. Optional geothermal stops include Craters of the Moon or Wai-O-Tapu if time allows.

  • Booking this trip doesn't lock you into these exact places. On the day you can ask your driver to skip a stop, linger longer somewhere, or head somewhere else entirely.
  • The one thing we do need to keep is where you're picked up and where you finish — those stay as booked.
  • Your booked time still applies (12 hours for this trip). Your driver has to get home too, so anything beyond that needs to be arranged and paid for in advance.

Price covers the private vehicle, driver and fuel. Activity tickets (e.g. Hobbiton, Waitomo Caves, geothermal parks) are the customer's responsibility.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive to Taupō?

The drive is roughly 2-2.5 hours each way, so we start early to maximise time at the lake.

Can we add Wai-O-Tapu on the way?

Yes, but it makes a very long day. We recommend an overnight option if you want both.

Are the Huka Falls walks easy?

Yes. There are several short viewing platforms and easy walking tracks.
